Featured Content and Thumbnail Problems

I applied everything set cache to 777, used thumbnail custom field... I can't get it to work. ANy issues with wordpress 2.9? also i want to change come colors on the side bar... and remove subscribe and translations on the footer. can you teach me how? thanks!
