Yes, it works with v2.8, I know there are get_category bug with that version and many themes are broken for it. I added a version detection and a FIX that makes every function to work like a charm on v2.8 as well as on other versions. - Multi-Layout – Magazine or Blog.

The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.

Thing is that you must first unzip file in your pc and then upload the theme folder.
ps: keep in mind that all themes at the moment work up to WordPress 2.8.4 version.
Soon enough I m going to update them to current WP version so subscribe to my newsletter to get notified.
